My current deck explained...

First of all, I was at the “Linkin Park” concert in “Graz” (Austria) and this band is awesome. They had a solo for each of their members during the show and they played their greatest/newest hits. To mention something that has nothing to do with “Yu-Gi-Oh”.

I’m planning to attend at the next “Shonen Jump Championship” after Indianapolis, so I’m waiting for more info about that. I hope “Konami” will announce it soon…

I know everyone likes to see decklists and so I decided to post the decklist first and then my thought’s about it. Here’s one of the promised decklists I mentioned in my last entry.

Rest as usual...

So I made some changes since my last version. I figured out what cards I can cut and what cards are essential for the deck. First of all I thought about the whole “Rescue Cat” logic.

For me there are three things I want to do with a Rescue Cat:

1. Scenario:
I have a “Summoner Monk” or a “Gravekeeper’s Spy” (or something like that) and I want to get two X-“Saber Airbellum” to bring “Arcanite Magician” and attack with “X-Saber Airbellum” for card advantage.

2. Scenario:
I only have my “Rescue Cat” and want to bring “Goyo Guardian” to steal or overrun my opponent’s monster. So the only real monsters to play for that are “Des Koala” or “Neo-Spacian Dark Panther”. Both are cards that can do something if I draw them to my hand and I won with both because of their effects, so they are not trash.

3. Scenario:
I want to get a “X-Saber Airbellum” and a “Sea Koala” to use the effect of “Sea Koala” and overrun the opponent’s monster with it to hit directly with “X-Saber Airbellum” and gain card advantage. The only thing that matters is that “Sea Koala” is a very bad card in your hand (mostly dead) and we have no real good level 5 Synchro monster in the current TCG.

I don’t like playing cards that can be dead in my hand. I want to play cards which can work alone. So I decided to cut “Sea Koala” out of my deck. Next thing I came up was “Ryko, Lightsworn Hunter”. Of course he’s a good flip monster and of course he trades one-one most of the time, but I thought that he’s not essential for the deck and this was my reason to cut him. So I built only the “Goyo Guardian” plan and it works fine for me.

Next mission? Cut the monster down to the essential ones. So this deck is called “AKB” (Arcanite Kitty Beat) and this is the best plan the deck can do. So I started testing different kinds of monster strategies. Once I played a version with 3 “Blackwing, Gale the Whirlwind”, 3 “Des Koala”, 3 “Gravekeeper’s Spy”, 3 “Book of Moon”, 3 “Cold Wave” 3 “Mind Control”, 3 “Bottomless Trap Hole” and 3 “Dimensional Prison”. I wanted to play a lot of cards 3 times to find out how much I really need each of them. First cards that didn’t work were the “Des Koalas” and the “Dimensional Prisons”. “Dimensional Prison” is a very bad card in the current metagame, but I wanted to have something that can defend my weak monsters. But this card will always be destroyed and only work versus slow decks. So all out! “Des Koala” is no power horse, but the only other dark monster to play because I don’t want to play a second “Neo-Spacian Dark Panther”. So cut to one. The “Blackwing, Gale the Whirlwind”, “Gravekeeper’s Spy”, “Mind Control”, “Cold Wave” and “Book of Moon” were all cards, that I don’t really need to play three times. They are not so broken and playing the whole set is wasting a lot of space. The only superior card was “Bottomless Trap Hole”. This is the card I always want to have set versus nearly every deck in the current metagame. “Cat-Synchro” can’t make their “Rescue Cat” into double “X-Saber Airbellum” move, “Blackwing” loses the summon (which is the key strategy to win versus that deck type) and “Lightsworn” and “Gladial Beast” always hated the card. I also tested “Threatening Roar”, but if I don’t play “Bottomless Trap Hole” I always let my opponent to build his field without a fear. I never liked “Threatening Roar” because I’m a card advantage player and so the only deck where I will ever play this card is in the sideboard.

So, the next thing I had to do was to find an access to “Crush Card Virus”, the number one card versus “Lightsworn”. So I had to play enough targets to activate it and find a way to get it as soon as possible. So I choose to play two “Gravekeeper’s Guard” instead of one, cause I can search them with “Gravekeeper’s Spy” and they can kill Synchro monsters (if someone thinks that he “pro” reads my facedown “Ryko, Lightsworn Hunter”) and they can make the way free for “X-Saber Airbellum” to steal a card from the opponent’s hand. So these are enough reasons to play two instead of one. Then I added “Sangan” and “Neo-Spacian Dark Panther” which are obvious choices in my opinion. Four “Crush Card Virus” targets should be enough. Next card I choose to play is “Gold Sarcophagus”. It’s the best tutor the game has. You can search what ever you want. And I always want to have “Crush Card Virus” versus “Lightsworn” and these two cards are making a big difference in the matchup. You can always search the card you need for your opponents deck. So “Heavy Storm”, “Summoner Monk” and “Monster Reborn” are the other power cards I would get.

“Dark Armed Dragon” and “Cyber Dragon” are both to strong in the current metagame. “Cyber Dragon” is an easy access to a Level 8 Synchro monster and always a card that will gain card advantage by only attacking a weaker opponent’s monster. The more I play him, the more I think that it was a very big failure to cut him out of the deck. He’s working amazing for me. I choose to play two “Blackwing, Gale the Whirlwind” cause I think its “pro” to play around my opponent’s “Bottomless Trap Hole”. I love the situation where I tune him with a spellcaster monster and destroying everything because he never gets into to situation to activate his face down “Bottomless Trap Hole”. Also I wanted to have more tuner than only “X-Saber Airbellum”. “Gravekeeper’s Spy” is too amazing and wins more games than losing because your opponent mind controls him. He sets up One-Turn-Kills and is a wall for “Blackwing”. This was the way how I got to my 18 monster cards. I choose to don’t play “Gorz, Emissary of Darkness” because I don’t want to draw him dead into my hand (so he ended in the sideboard). If I would play “Allure of Darkness”, I would play him, but I don’t think that “Allure of Darkness” is any kind of needed or broken in “Cat-Synchro”.

The trap cards are staples, I only moved “Trap Dustshoot” out of the main, because it’s a situational card. Of course it’s amazing in a lot of situation, but it’s also dead in others (that means it went into the sideboard). “Mirror Force” is amazing versus “Blackwing” and I won’t cut this card because it can get destroyed.

Let’s talk about the spell cards. I mentioned a lot of spell cards in the upper part of my thoughts. I think two “Cold Wave”, “Heavy Storm”, “Mystical Space Typhoon” and “Giant Trunade” should be enough cards versus your opponent’s back row cards. I also tested “Nobleman of Extermination” but it doesn’t works with “Bottomless Trap Hole”. In most games it was more hurting than helping. I think it’s very good in Vittorio Wiktor’s deck from the “European Championship” instead of “Cold Wave” but not in my deck. “Monster Reborn” and “Brain Control” are staples. “Gold Sarcophagus” is a tutor and I love playing it. I choose to play the whole set of “Pot Avarice” cause it’s the best example of card advantage and it enables the late game. This is the only card, where I think I could cut one for something else. You can so easily activate this card and reuse your whole Synchro monster engine. “Mind Control” works very well with my five level three tuners, enables One-Turn-Kills and is also a card that wrecks “Lightsworn”. So last but not least “Book of Moon”. This card is chainable, can stop a lot of cards and is always a card like “Bottomless Trap Hole” where you have to play around. This card destroys “Arcanite Magician”, “Test Tiger”, “Mind Control”, “Black Whirlwind” and also works with your flip monsters. Enough reasons to play it.

If I would play in something like the “UkayPro Championship” or a “Shonen Jump Championship”, I would play “Gorz, Emissary of Darkness” and “Trap Dustshoot” instead of the third “Bottomless Trap Hole” and the third “Pot of Avarice” cause I would take more risk.

I also tested a variant with “Gigantes” and “Psychic Commander” instead of “Blackwing, Gale the Whirlwind” and “Dark Armed Dragon”, but it was not good enough. Gale is better than the commander and playing to much on the One-Turn-Kill kills your own deck. You need to have a consistent deck and not a “lucksack” deck. You can play a “Rose, Warrior of Revenge” instead of the second “Blackwing, Gale the Whirlwind” if you think you need an easier access to a level 8 Synchro Monster. I don’t think it’s needed so this card is more a good sideboard slot. “Blackwing, Gale the Whirlwind” is working alone and “Rose, Warrior of Revenge” is not because it only combos with “Mind Control” or “Summoner Monk”.

The last part today is the sideboard. I like playing three “Kycoo, the Ghost Destroyer” versus “Lightsworn” or “Necro Gardna” decks. He’s the surprise and I like him because he’s a beast stick. Three “Legendary Jujitsu Master” are good for “Blackwing” or “Gladial Beast”. He’s and always was a wall for some kind of decks. I tested to side “My Body as a Shield” in the mirror match (switched with the “Cold Wave”), but I don’t know if it’s good enough. I thought I prefer “My Body as a Shield” for their “Bottomless Trap Hole” it’s working, but it’s not amazing. I played a pair of “Royal Oppression” and “Light-Imprisoning Mirror” and they were okay. I never won because of the mirror and I only used the “Royal Oppression” versus “Gladial Beast”. They cards are ok. The rest of the sideboard doesn’t really exist because I concentrated more on the main deck than the sideboard. I will update the sideboard when I played more.

So this was a longer article and I hope I helped you (you should also find out that I love using the “so” word, so I’m going to avoid that). It would be nice, if you play my deck and you have success with it, that you mention me somewhere in the coverage or somewhere. I want to help people to become better in this card game and this would be a positive feedback. I already helped someone to qualify for worlds and I think he was not the last one I can help.

For your future, don’t cheat (ruleshark, fake-shuffle, lying to a judge, bribe, draw extra cards, manipulating the game state, steal and a lot of more things), be patient and have a lot of fun while playing.

Nice deck and a very good round-up of your thoughts about the cards you're using.
One question remains though: Won't you play Tragoedia or were you not giving it any thought because the card isn't out and legal to play yet?
Nevertheless, keep it coming, it's nice to see professionals sharing their mind with fellow players :-)

Tragoedia & new deck

As soon as i have 3 Tragoedia, i will try to integrate it in my decks or build a complete new deck.

My newest creation is a "Nohrellas-Dragon-Combo" Deck which can win vs every deck in the format. I will post it as soon as possible. It's only my first try and it won nearly every match i played with it.

It's nice to see, that (non-shy) people leave a feedback ;-)

Claudio! First of all I want to congratulate you for the blog, I think is very useful for a lot of people. I actually don't play your builds, but your explanations help me to round up some ideas and maybe change some thoughts. Well, only that, congratulations for your blog (=

See you on msn,
